2017 Alpine sportscar details slowly leaked

Despite being one of the most enigmatic manufacturers in the world, French performance spin-off Alpine has revealed some details on its yet-to-be-named sportscar ahead of its public debut at the Geneva motor show in March.

Rumours circulating suggest the new car may be given the name AS110, and it has been confirmed to launch as a limited-run Premiere Edition.

The Premiere Edition is available for order this year in 11 European countries followed by Japan and the UK in 2018, however it is still unclear if and when the brand makes its way to Australia.

Alpine will make 1955 examples of the Premiere Edition as a nod to the year the brand was founded, and customers can request a specific number, with 1 and 1955 expected to be the most sought after.

Price for the AS110 have yet to be confirmed, but the French marque has said that it will not be priced over €60,000 ($A85,000).

The only performance information confirmed so far is a 4.5 second sprint from 0-100km/h, with rumours circulating about a possible Mercedes-AMG partnership or a specially-developed 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit.

It is thought to have a power output of 205kW, with whispers suggesting a more hi-po AS1 variant coming further down the track, capable of cranking power up to 240kW.

The Premiere Edition versions of the new model will be the first to come off the line.

It has been reported that six- and seven-speed gearboxes from Getrag could be used, with manual, torque-converter automatic and dual-clutch transmissions all possibilities to make it into the production version.

Alpine has revealed some details about the AS110’s construction, showing images of its lightweight aluminium body and chassis.

According to the manufacturer, fabrication using aluminium is difficult and requires special expertise, but results in agile handling, a high-quality finish and a lighter vehicle.

The design of the production car is still a mystery, however the Alpine concept revealed in February last year as well as a more recent camouflaged prototype give a strong hint as to what the new car will look like.

The disguised version looks to have paid tribute to the original rear-engined Alpine with a large-bore centre-exit exhaust, rear grille and fine race-derived diffuser, as well as the circular driving lights of the original model.

Alpine managing director Michael van der Sande said the brand decided to start taking orders early as a result of the great amount of interest from customers following the announcement that the brand will be resurrected.

"Alpines made such a mark because of the elegance of their designs, their nimble handling and their memorable successes in world class motor racing and rallying,” he said. “The interest that the announcement of Alpine’s return has generated across the globe inspired us to give sports car enthusiasts and Alpine fans early opportunity to reserve the new car."

"The Premiere Edition versions of the new model will be the first to come off the line and we wanted to allow Alpine fans to choose the number of their car."
