Hyundai i30 Fastback N 2019 confirmed for Australia

Hyundai’s go-fast performance family is set to welcome another member, with the N-stamped i30 Fastback officially confirmed for Australia.

The i30 Fastback N will arrive here next year, where it will join the only other performance Hyundai on offer in Oz, the i30 N hatch. The third member of the family, the Veloster N, is looking unlikely to make a local debut.

The newest N car is based on the i30 Fastback offered overseas; a four-door coupe-styled sibling to the brand’s top-selling hatchback.

“Prototype testing is now well under way, including extensive assessments on a variety of road surfaces around Europe,” Hyundai tells us. “Among the testing locations is the famous Nordschleife circuit at the Nürburgring in Germany, where Hyundai has its own technical centre.”

While Hyundai is yet to confirm engine outputs, we know the Fastback version will share its turbocharged 2.0-litre engine with its hatchback sibling, and will surely arrive with that engine’s highest possible outputs - the 202kW, 335Nm Performance tune. Whether it also makes use of the hatch's LSD, sonic-boom exhaust note and adaptive suspension remains to be seen.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but we’d be shocked to see it stray too far from the $39,990 asking price of the i30 N hatchback.

Which would you prefer, Fastback or hatch? Tell us in the comments below.
