BMW has confirmed more details of its upcoming M8 performance coupe, with one of the biggest details being the M car’s availability across three different bodystyles.

BMW plans to make the M8 available as a coupe, convertible and a ‘gran coupe’ (liftback/wagon). The coupe will be the first to land, followed by the other two which are still ‘under development’.

The M8 is also confirmed to share the same 'M xDrive' system as the BMW M5, complete with the ‘Active M differential’. The all-wheel drive system is rear-biased, and able to be switched to 2WD mode with DSC off.

While official outputs of the M8 are yet to be confirmed, BMW has also said that the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 (also used in the M5) will output ‘north of 440kW’. In the M5 the engine produces 441kW/750Nm, so expect similar figures.

The M8 is yet to be shown in production guise without camouflage.

BMW also confirmed details on how the M8 will be significantly altered from the M850i in terms of rigitity and performance. The M8 will get bespoke double wishbone front and five-link rear suspension, tuned by the M division, as well as an increase in track width at the front axle and firmer anti-roll bars at the rear axle.

The ‘M Servotronic’ steering is confirmed to be the same system out of the M5 but will be ‘specifically tuned’ for the M8’s chassis. The system dynamically alters feedback to allow for light steering at low speed, but stiffer and more reactive steering at high speeds.

Similarly, the M8’s active dampers can be adjusted to three modes for either comfort or sport.

The M8 will wear 19-inch alloy wheels as standard but will be able to be optioned with 20-inch alloys at launch. Meanwhile the standard disc brakes (395mm front, 380mm rear) can be swapped out for ‘M carbon-ceramic brakes’ (400mm front, 380mm rear).

Pricing for the BMW M8 is yet to be announced, even internationally, so expect more details in the lead-up to its expected late 2019 launch window.
